Between the formulation of the economical-juridical school and its opposers the author proposes a new and different approach. Analysis of the social structure of an area of the Sienese district at the beginning of the 14th century highlights the strong social disproportion existing: this induces abandoning the opposition category city-district from the moment that the latter cannot be considered homogeneous and univocal.
