Original publisher's dark blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. Beautiful marbled endpapers with predominant blue color and gilt accents. 5 1/4" x 7 1/2." 424 pages, complete. Eight additional pages in back advertising other books by Carleton. Former owner's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown: "Paul Godehn." Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Covers are Near Fine with slight corner and edge wear and a few small spots on front and back. Pages are slightly age-toned and a few have dampstains and other spots. A Very Good copy overall. By P. T. Barnum, the famous showman. About "humbugs" in history, who Barnum defines as people who commit hoaxes. Barnum himself was termed the "Prince of Humbugs." He was well-known (and became controversial) for staging a variety of hoaxes for publicity and marketing purposes. According to Barnum, humbugs are people who deceive but do not do so to the detriment of their character.
