First Edition. Two volumes in one, early text leaves stained. There are three maps by Charles Bell in each edition.The english and the French editions, bound together in an elaborate full black morocco binding in a Renaissance/ Late Mediaeval style, with raised strapwork borders terminating in rectangular blocks at each corner, and a large central raised lozenge, blank in centre. The divided off areas are richly gilt, as is the spine which is divided by raised bands into 6 panels. Each board has wide richly gilt doublures, with a central blank vellum panel. The edges are gilt and gauffred. The free endpapers are newly replaced. This binding was clearly done for presentation, and it is interesting to speculate that this may be an unrecorded example of Cape binding of this period: there is no name or indication of origin.
