Uncommon example with a dw/dj in a book of its age and given the period of production,i.e. 1942-1947 - with wartime paper-rationing,and the poor quality of paper generally used and survival rates of air-raids on domestic and commercial properties i.e publishers+printers. Any dw/dj would have been of substandard quality and fragility and be prone to subsequent disintegration - as testified with this example - and usually discarded,or be reverse printed - possibly coming from an entirely different book/ title. Also particularly scarce, selling out within a couple of months of it's issue. Famous Five's 6th adventure. The 'Five': Julian, Dick,George,Anne and Timmy the dog in another adventure. The Five discover a secret tunnel under the sea. They are back at Kirrin, where George's island is,the exciting island where they have already had so many thrilling adventures. This is their most exciting adventure of all! They come home for the holidays,to find that George's scientist father has gone to live on the island himself to complete one of his greatest experiments. He thinks he is all alone there,in his strange hiding place, but - who else is there? The Five go across to see him - and leave Timmy behind to guard him! But what happens to Timmy? And where is the hidden work-room? What is happening on Kirrin Island? Excitements come one after another - the hidden entrance to the underground passage - the strange caves - the tunnel - the quarry with its unexpected passage into the hill - where does that lead to? Eileen [Alice] Soper (b. 1905 - d.1990) Daughter of George Soper under whom she studied and was artistically trained. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy at the early age of 15.She derived much of her subject matter from her father's garden,in the house her father built and which along with her sister she lived and inherited, the greater part of her life. She and her sister have maintained and preserved it as a nature sanctuary.A painter of wildlife, children, portraits and miniatures, and engraver. She was a founder member of the Society of Wildlife Artists, and elected to the RMS (Royal Society of Miniature Painters,Sculptors and Gravers) in 1972. Eileen is most remembered for her collaboration with Enid Blyton, notably for the 'Famous Five' series (1942-1963) - though she also published her own children's books in the 1940s,and then working mainly on her wildlife illustrations from the 1950s onwards, based on the wildlife in her garden. Enid Blyton's books have sold over 500 million copies and have been translated into other languages more often than any other children's author. She wrote over 600 books and hundreds of short stories, including favourites such as 'The Famous Five','The Secret Seven','The Magic Faraway Tree','Malory Towers' and 'Noddy'. Born in London in 1897,Enid lived much of her life in Buckinghamshire and adored dogs, gardening and the countryside. She died in 1968 but remains one of the world's best-loved storytellers.
