Black Oak Books, Berkeley, CA, 1990

Original broadside printed on beige paper in green and black ink. Small green and white illustration of a fish at the bottom. 7 1/4" x 11 1/2." Broadside is virtually pristine and intact. A Fine copy. A beautiful, fine-press broadside featuring an excerpt from T. C. Boyle's novel, East to East (1990). East to East is a dark comedy that follows the satirical yet tragic story of Hiro Tanaka, a Japanese sailor who jumps ship and lands on the shores of Georgia in the United States. After being shunned for his mixed-race heritage in Japan, Hiro is hopeful that he will be accepted in the U.S. Unfortunately, Hiro's vision of the U.S. is not to be. Through a series of mishaps and foibles predicated upon prejudice, ignorance, and racial discrimination, Hiro finds himself on the run, being chased by police and immigration officials. He then stumbles upon an artist's colony, Thanatopsis House, where he finds some semblance of refuge but not for long. T. Coraghessan Boyle (b. 1948) is an American author. He has published sixteen novels and over 100 short stories. In 1988, he won the PEN/Faulkner Award for his novel, World's End. Copyright information printed at the bottom: "From East Is East, Copyright 1990 by T. Coraghessan Boyle. This is a gift from Black Oak Books, Berkeley on the occasion of a reading by the author. Designed and printed at Okeanos Press, 1990." Black Oak Books was a bookstore in Berkeley, California. It originally opened in 1983 and carried a wide variety of new and used books, some of which were rare and first editions. Sadly, the store closed in 2016 due to the rising cost of rent in the area. Okeanos Press was also based in Berkeley. The first couple lines from the broadside: "He sprang, taking his adversary by surprise. But there was no need for the karate he'd mastered through assiduous study of the diagrams in the back of a martial arts magazine, no need to grapple, kick or gouge--the boifurendo had fallen back in horror, his eyes hard as nuggets, a look of impotence and constipation pressed into his features.".
