Circa 1900, sized 6 x 9.5 inches, on heavy plate paper, generally very clean and bright. The author, b. Unadilla, Otsego County, New York, February 20, 1827, was a soldier, politician, Congressman, and diplomat. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he registered his sentiments as a War Democrat and in 1861 recruited a company of infantry and was commissioned captain of Company E, 6th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. He participated in numerous battles and his success and bravery won him promotions. By 1863 he was a full colonel and in June, 1864, he was appointed commander of the Iron Brigade. In the same month he led the assaults on Petersburg and made an heroic advance at FitzHugh's crossing, where his troops crossed the Rappahannock under enemy fire and captured the Confederate works. For this action he was made brigadier general of volunteers. After the war he returned to Fond du Lac, resumed his law practice, and continued his political activities.. Print. Book Condition: VG.
