Regarding the earlier Braun and Hogenberg view of Vilnius, on which de Wit based his work (with some minor updating):

\\\"Among the buildings visible in the wooden built city, as depicted here in the late sixteenth century, are the imperial palace and the Stanislas cathedral of 1387 (4 in the key), and several other churches and religious foundations dating from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries, indicating the status of Vilnius as an orthodox see of the Greek Orthodox Church and episcopal see of the Roman Catholic Church. The old city is completely enclosed by a heavily fortified masonry wall (coloured in yellow in the view). The great Gothic cathedral of St John was built between 1327 and 1427 (14 in the key, shown as S Iohan Kirche). One of the most extraordinary monuments of German Gothic architecture was the St Anna and St Bernhard complex (12 in the key, shown as Die bernardiner clost); its remarkable west front in the late German Gothic style dates from about 1501 and was built in brick. In general, Braun and Hogenberg\\\'s view of Vilnius records a city of wooden houses possibly as depicted by the Flemish artist, Guillebert de Lannoy, who visited it in 1414. In the intervening century and a half, however, much of the town was rebuilt in stone or brick by German merchants and settlers. Their \\\'Deutsche Gasse\\\' or the area around the Rathaus (18 in the key) exemplify this rebuilding. Much of the brick was imported from the west by the merchants themselves.\\\" (Goss 56), Goss 56
