BURGESS, GELETT : FINE WORK MARRED

BURGESS, Gelett. A FINE WORK MARRED. [N.P.: N.P., c. 1947]. Manuscript, 7 typewritten sheets, plus an earlier version of page 1, with holograph corrections in ink. This is an unpublished review of "Shakespeare's Use of the Arts of Language" by Sister Miriam Joseph, part of the review being used by Burgess to advance the Shakespeare-Oxford theory. The 7pp. manuscript has relatively trivial corrections, while the additional page 1 would appear to be the first or second draft, with many changes in wording. Also, on the verso of this page, Burgess has typed a letter to an "Abe," quoting in full a letter of Sigmund Freud to a Mr. Looney. Burgess' letter warns that he has not yet received permission to print Freud's letter. Together with the manuscript is a carbon copy of the same review. The pages bear the mark of a paper clip in the upper left corner and are slightly chipped at the lower right edge. The early draft of page 1 is somewhat more worn, with a few small nicks at the top and bottom edge., Fine. Illustr: MS
