Rhodes and his partner, Charles Rudd, were at work at Kimberley establishing the De Beers Diamond Mines when gold was discovered on the Witwatersrand, in the Transvaal, in 1896. Gold brought him immense wealth (in 1895 The Gold Fields of Africa declared a profit of £2,161,778 - said to be the biggest profit ever earned by a limited liability company in the City of London to that date). It was this enterprise which provided much of the cash which enabled Cecil Rhodes to establish Rhodesia. Primarily a book about Gold Mining it is also about the way the company dragged itself from its knees during the depression of the thirties to forge ahead and not only change its own fortunes but also be responsible for opening up South Africa's new gold fields and replenishing the gold reserves of the world.
