Mary Hartwell Catherwood (1847-1902) was an American author who wrote popular historical fiction, short stories, and poetry. She sometimes wrote under the pseudonym of "Lewtrah" which is "Hartwell" spelled backwards with a dropped "L." In her writing, Mary was known for her emphasis on Midwestern settings, American dialects, and historical accuracy of her historical novels. She was born Mary Hartwell in Luray, Ohio and moved between Ohio and Illinois throughout her childhood and adult life. Mary began her career early and became a schoolteacher at the age of 13 and was published in the Newark (Ohio) American at the age of 15. In 1868, Mary graduated from Granville Female College after which she resumed teaching and later continued writing. In 1877, she married James Steele Catherwood. Their daughter, Hazel, was born in 1884. The front of each calling card has "Mrs. James Steele Catherwood" printed on the front and "Sincerely your friend, Mary Hartwell Catherwood" handwritten on the back. In the letter, Catherwood gladly replies to an request for autographs stating she will include several and asks the recipient if he or she has bought her recently published books, Mackinac and Lake Stories and Spanish Peggy. Mackinac and Lake Stories is a historical novel about the British occupation of Mackinac Island. Spanish Peggy is a historical novel about a young heiress, whose guardian is Abraham Lincoln, and a devious plot by her cousin to gain her fortune.
