Chamberlin, Amory Nelson, Reverend, Translator and Printer : Rare Pamphlet In Sequoyan Syllabary, Cherokee Language / The Shorter Catechism

Chieftain Print, Vinita, Indian Territory, 1892

8vo. 11 folded sheets, four pages per sheet, for a total of 44 pages, unbound, 1892. Some pages are bright with dark text, others are toned with text somewhat faded, but still legible. This is an exceptionally scarce Cherokee language imprint most likely from Vinita, Indian Territory, which was later Oklahoma. The Reverend Chamberlin went to Pheasant Hill mission, in what is now Craig County, Oklahoma, in 1868, several years before Vinita came into existence. He printed his own translations of religious matter on a crude press and distributed them among the Native Americans as part of his missionary work for the Presbyterian Church. The Chieftain Newspaper began around 1882. Not in Hargrett. This item was apparently never issued.. Book. Book Condition: VG. Binding: Soft cover
