Chilvers, Hedley A : The Story of De Beers - With some notes on the Company's Financial, Farming, Railway and Industrial Activities in Africa, and some Introductory Chapters on the River Diggings and Early Kimberley

Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1939

344 pages (complete). Inscribed by T A M Huddle, Mayor of Johannesburg 1939/40, to the unfortunate Sir John Wardlaw Milne on his visit to the city. Wardlaw Milne was MP for Kidderminster. He not only recommended the abolition of free education during the dark days of the Depression, he also tabled a no-confidence motion in Winston Churchill in 1942. He compounded this irrationality by recommending the Duke of Gloucester (whose own stupidity was seen as his saving grace) to take charge of the future conduct of the war. He not only lost the vote but also his seat in 1945. There is no evidence that this book has been read, but there is plenty of evidence of inconsiderate storage. The cloth covers are worn, stained, marked and sunned. They are resolute. Within, the early pages have storage wear, stains. The contents have mild foxing. Otherwise, the contents are tight, mild, amiable, competent and assured. fk. Book Condition: Fair. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
