Court proceedings against James J. Matles (1909-1975), who was interrogated after being subpoenaed by the Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). HUAC was a committee under the House of Representatives formed in 1938 to investigate citizens and organizations thought to have Communist or Fascist ties. These proceedings took place in 1950 at the height of the Red Scare during the Cold War when McCarthyist tactics were common. Matles was a General Secretary-Treasurer of a labor union called the United Electrical, Radio & Machine Workers of America (UE) and founder of the Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) which UE operated under. During the proceedings, Matles was asked a series of questions concerning any Communist activities. Matles refused to answer many of the questions based upon the First and Fifth Amendments of the Constitution. Due to his refusal to answer the questions, Matles was placed "in contempt of the House of Representatives of the United States." During the early 1950s, the United States Government tried to denaturalize and deport Matles on the basis that he had sworn falsely about his political affiliations when he had applied for American citizenship in 1934. In 1958, the case against Matles was thrown out by the United States Supreme Court for the reason that the Government was found to have unconstitutionally withheld documents from the defense at Matles's denaturalization trial..
