The western boundary of Virginia is not shown, but the word Kentucky appears in the correct area. Kentucky had received consent from Virginia for separate statehood in 1789 and was admitted to the Union in 1792, at which time Frankfort became the capital. The Federal City is identified along the "Potowmack R.". The Appalachian Mountain Range sweeps northeast through Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania as several series of individual mountains. Most of the 11 Finger Lakes are shown in New York. The boundaries between New York and its neighbors Massachusetts and Vermont are not in their final configuration. The Western Territory is well defined by rivers and the Great Lakes, but nearly void of settlements., Philips, Maps, p870.
