Constantyne, George : Transcript of an Original Manuscript, containing a Memorial from George Constantyne to Thomas Lord Cromwell

J. B. Nichols and Son, London, 1830

From the title page, "Communicated to the Society of Antiquaries by Thomas Amyot, Esq. F.R.S. Treasurer, in a Letter to Henry Ellis, Esq. F.R.S., Secretary. From the Archaeologia, Vol. XIII". 31 pages, uncut edges. Brown paper cover with significant chipping, barely held together with string. Reprint of a letter and introduction published in the Society of Antiquaries of London journal "Archaelogia". The letter is written by George Constantyne, a clergyman, to Thomas Lord Cromwell, King Henry VIII's chief minister. In the letter, Constantyne relates various conversations he had with John Barlow, Dean of Westbury, and his brother, Sir Thomas Barlow, between August 19-27, 1539. These conversations related to the recent passing of the Act of Six Articles as well as other recent events, such as the execution of Anne Boleyn and the process of finding the King a new wife after the death of Jane Seymour. It appears that the Barlows accused Constantyne of being a "Sacramentary", someone who does not believe the Eucharist is the actual body and blood of Christ, which would be a violation of the Six Articles. Mr. Constantyne writes this letter to defend himself.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
