Awesome, sensational rare offering of a 64 diary archive lot belonging to Willard J. Cowdrey. The diaries begin in 1864, though 1864 is Cowdrey's mother's diary wherein she keeps track of household chores. The rest are all penned by Willard as a young man [we estimate he was about 15 or 16 in 1866] going to school and working from 1866 on through 1931. Willard is a rich character and the snippets provided are a mere fraction of Willard's life that he richly details. A mere scanning of the first few years shows the boy, the young man and the future man himself - and one will find that Willard, in just a few dozen entries shows the reader he is a woodsman, loom operator, fiddler, singer, hunter, entrepreneur, gun dealer, volunteer fireman, fisherman, barber, gardener, "Agent" in Mason Village NH, Cambridgeport VT, & Thomaston CT (when he is older) and so much more. Here are some entries: "took off three cuts today. I moulded twenty four bullets tonight. I went down to the mill tonight and painted my skates." "I had a fit today and staid in the house all day." (He is laid up 6 days before a doctor comes.) "Father called us at twenty minutes of five. We thout he [his little brother Fredie, 5 years, 11 months, he had diphtheria] was dieing but he lived till four pm. Dr. Marchal came fifteen minutes after he died." "I took my fiddle up to the White's to have him put on strings." "I have been to town today and gut the cloth for a pair of pance. I am going to school this winter." "I don't get eny time to get to do eny thing but to study all the time." "tonight drank and drank and drank.I found myself to bed drunker than a son of a bitch vomited all over the bed." "been to the meeting house to see about a singing school. We did not do very well." "down to the mill tonight to get some charcoal to cleen my teeth with." A younger hand writes in Wilard's diary: "To all it may concern Know that WJ Cowdrey went upstairs to shit. Wilard is going to shit his pants." "Flagg was spak to me about running five looms." "Down to the mill tonight to ask Father if I could join the Brass Band." "Docktor has been heer twice today. Mother says she is going to die." "The small pox in High Bridge.
