A concise autobiographical account chronicling the early years of one of the first women's missionary societies, the Women's Missionary Union of Friends in America, now known as the United Society of Friends Women International (USFWI). USFWI has done missionary work in many different places around the world including China, Cuba, Guatemala, Jamaica, Japan, and Kenya. Authored by Eliza Armstrong Cox (1850-1935), a Quaker and one of the Women's Missionary Union's founders. She spent the later years of her life in Whittier, California. Much of her account describes the history of the Union's founding and early years, key figures who were part of the Union's formation, obstacles overcome, and some of the work the Union has done since its founding. Cox's idea for the missionary society began in the winter of 1881 in Butlerville, southern Indiana, her current residence at the time. She had plans to start another women's missionary society after hearing of many other women joining similar societies of different denominations. She helped organize a first meeting which set the plan in motion. In 1888, the Union held its first assembly in Indianapolis which paved the way for the 1890 conference in Glen Falls. This conference formally inaugurated Cox's missionary society as the Women's Foreign Missionary Society of Friends in America. In 1917, the name changed to the Women's Missionary Union. The name changed a couple of more times to reflect changing interests of the society; in 1948, the society was renamed United Society of Friends Women, and in 1974, it was renamed United Society of Friends Women International to acknowledge the society's annual meetings in Jamaica and Kenya..
