Original publisher's black full-leather binding profusely decorated in gilt. Gilt border decorations and impressed decorations on front and back. Gilt pictorial illustration and lettering on spine. All edges gilt. A beautiful book. 6 1/4" x 9 1/4." All pages, complete. Pagination varies and is grouped by author. George Crabbe: Pages [iii]-vii, [9]-396. Reginald Heber: Pages [iii]-xvii, [1]-43. Robert Pollok: Pages [1]-79. Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Binding is tight. Slight rubbing and surface chipping to the covers. Light cracking to the front and back outer joints. Corners bumped slightly. Light foxing to the pages. Gilt edges somewhat faded. A Very Good copy. The book is divided into three parts, each highlighting the work of the notable eighteenth- and nineteenth-century poets, George Crabbe, Reginald Heber, and Robert Pollok. Most of the book comprises the poetry of Crabbe. Crabbe and Heber each have their own biographical introduction. The section dedicated to Pollok is composed entirely of his most famous work, The Course of Time. Epes Ellery's bookseller's ticket on white paper is tipped in on back pastedown. Epes Ellery (1830-1894) is notable for being the first antiquarian bookseller on the West Coast. He had apprenticed under bookbinders Henry Kitfield and Henry A. Gane in Boston before moving to California in 1853. In 1854, Ellery co-founded the Antiquarian Book Store with Augustus Doyle in San Francisco. In 1856, Ellery bought out Doyle and continued to operate the bookstore until 1863. Ellery subsequently retired from the book business and ventured into the real estate and mining industries.. Book.
