Hujar was the first to see Cratsley's talent and persuaded him to study with Lisette Model at the New School For Social Research. Influenced by Eugene Atget and Andre Kertesz and inspired by the work of Model, who became his mentor, the work took on a more urgent and at the same time more poignant tone in its final phase, as Cratsley, still struggling with AIDS, persevered to communicate life's ultimate potential and fragility, its vibrancy and mortality.
