An austerely elegant production by Bruce Cratsley and James Crump: Oversize-volume format. Purple cloth boards with silver titles on spine, as issued. Photographs by Bruce Cratsley. Texts by Barbara Head Millstein, Julia Van Haaften, Sherry Suris, and Elsa Dorfman. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features one of the photographer's most celebrated images, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Presents Bruce Cratsley's "White Light Silent Shadows". His highly personal and poetic work. As the title suggests, Cratsley's oeuvre is about the mysteries of light and shadow, whether the subjects be still lifes, cityscapes, urban street scenes, male nudes, or intimate portraits of friends and lovers. Encompasses the period between 1972 and 1997, when the life-defining event in the photographer's life was that he contracted AIDS, and somehow survived, unlike his close friend Peter Hujar, who died in 1987. Hujar was the first to see Cratsley's talent and persuaded him to study with Lisette Model at the New School For Social Research. Influenced by Eugene Atget and Andre Kertesz and inspired by the work of Model, who became his mentor, the work took on a more urgent and at the same time more poignant tone in its final phase, as Cratsley, still struggling with AIDS, persevered to communicate life's ultimate potential and fragility, its vibrancy and mortality. "Love and work become antidotes to illness, worry, and pain" (Bruce Cratsley). Bruce Cratsley died of AIDS in 1998, at the age of 53, and shortly after this book was finished and published. An absolute "must-have" title for Bruce Cratsley collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A scarce copy thus. 143 duotone plates. One of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. . ISBN 0965728056.
