Down and out in Paris,John Scout hears about the French publisher,Klick, who pays fifteen francs a thousand words for English-language pornography.Having no experience as a writer - and very little in matters of sex,for his fiancee, with whom he shares a room and bed, insists that she sleeps on top of the lower sheet and he beneath it - he manages nevertheless to write a dirty book,The Strip Teas. Following its publication in France,John eventually hears from a well-known London publisher who regards the book as a masterpiece, and who publishes it in England under the title Grand Climacteric by the new author Jakki Trover.Eventually there is a prosecution, and a distinguished company of bishops, dons, critics, novelists, television personalities, editors, psychologists, welfare workers,Members of Parliament, schoolteachers and the like jostle to speak out in the book's support. John is bewildered by all this as he is by the behaviour of Ursula, his fiancee, who spends her time eating out in smart restaurants with rich gentlemen, and by the attentions of his new publisher's secretary Pina. The author uses this theme to present as well-informed and amusing a satire about publishing and the literary scene as has been written. The book is also a subtle commentary on the confused manners and morals of the age.Above all,it is hilarious.See also rja2010,and rja2013.
