Following Britain's lead, South Africa abandoned the Gold Standard in the final days of 1932, after it became clear that the strictures of the system were in part responsible for the Great Depression. It could be said that South Africa, as the world's most significant producer of gold, had a stake in the maintenance of the Gold Standard, but even among South Africans the issue was one of hot debate. The fact that Hertzog and Smuts were forced into a coalition in 1933 was directly connected with the abandonment of the Gold Standard. The 1933 date of publication suggested by WorldCat seems incorrect, as the pamphlet is based on the presupposition that the Gold Standard is still in place. Mr Cunningham, a member of the Executive Council of the Cape Province, includes an essay by his friend, George Francis MacDaniel Ennis, "a fellow-townsman of my home town of Uitenhage", and this essay is dated 16th November, 1932.
