Curtin, Frank A.; Douglas, Alfred : Typed Letter Signed by Frank A. Curtin and Copy of a Typed Letter by Alfred Douglas

Original letter typed on beige stationery of Frank A. Curtin and an accompanying copy of a typed letter by Alfred Douglas. Curtin's letter is signed as "Frank Curtain" in green ink. Copy of Douglas's letter is unsigned. Datelined November 21, 1930 in Fresno, California. 8 1/2" x 11." Both letters are one page, complete. The letters are very clean and intact overall. Both letters have horizontal and vertical fold lines. Small spot in the lower-left corner of Curtin's letter not affecting text or handwriting. Douglas's letter has a small chip at the top and a small faint stain on the left edge, neither of which affect text. Frank A. Curtin was an autograph collector. Alfred Douglas (1870-1945) was a British poet and journalist. Curtin's stationery has printed green text at the top: "Frank A. Curtin, Lawyer; Rowell-Chandler Building, Fresno, California." In this letter, Curtin writes to the New York publishing company, Covici-Friede, Inc., about obtaining a copy of Douglas's letter that was recently sent to Covici-Friede from Douglas. Curtin's letter: "Gentlemen: I learned from Harry Hansen's Literary Calendar in the November 5th issue of the New York World that you have comparatively recently received from the Lord Alfred Douglas a letter in which he denies that he gave Frank Harris permission to publish in your new edition of Harris's 'Oscar Wilde' Lord Alfred's letter to Harris explaining former's version of his quarrel with Wilde. I have the book in question and I am writing in the hope that you will be good enough to furnish me with a copy of the letter mentioned, which will make the new edition I have even more complete." Excerpt from the copy of Douglas's letter addressed to Covici-Friede: "Sirs: It is perhaps superfluous for me to inform you that the 'full and final confession of Lord Alfred Douglas' which appears in the edition of Harris' disgraceful book lately published by you, was a private letter not intended for publication. ... So far from consenting to its publication I wrote Harris a very strong letter of protest (copy of which I have preserved) when he made a blackmailing threat to publish it. ... The impudent lies by Harris about me contained in his book are all admitted by Harris himself to be false ... No honest or honourable publisher would have published such a book." The copy of Douglas's letter accompanying Curtin's letter is presumably the one that Curtin obtained from Covici-Friede. At the top of Curtin's letter is the following handwriting in pencil from a representative at Covici-Friede: "Dear Sir: Herewith a copy of the letter you requested.". Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
