REBECCA D'MONTE AND NICOLE POHL have assembled a timely, ambitious, and provocative collection of essays that is both less and more extensive than their title suggests. For these communities are all British, and, notwithstanding the stated dates (1600-1800) and the organization (mostly chronological), only the first of these eleven essays treats a text that was written before 1640. Indeed the chronological scope of Female Communities suggests that an interest in utopian or quasi-utopian female communities in early modern Britain and a dynamic movement between imagined and actual communities of women is related to the unrest and Civil War in the 1640s. Hence the point that Lee Cullen Khanna makes in her incisive foreword: that "social and political instability" had "potential liberating effects ... for women's efforts to gain power" (xiii). The editors themselves speak more cautiously, however, since they want to problematize relationships at the same time that they point to connections or affinities between imagined and actual female communities.
