Stephen Daiter Gallery, Chicago, IL, 2005

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 80 pages. Exhibition Catalog. One of the most beautiful catalogs on the photographic art and achievement of John Gossage. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The ideal introduction/companion volume to and should NOT be confused with the book of the same title whose publication and imagery it celebrates. None of the copies was commercially sold. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now rare. A brilliant production by Stephen Daiter Gallery: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by John Gossage. Essay by Gerry Badger. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from January 7 through March 5, 2005. Presents John Gossage's "Berlin In The Time of The Wall: An Exhibition About A Book And Its Photographs". Celebrates - and gives equal weight to - the publication of the book (from which all of the exhibition's images are culled) as much as the photographs themselves. Gossage's discovery of Berlin was decisive to his development as a photographer whose goal is, singularly, photography that is "visually literary" (his words), that is to say, has the flow, fluency, and power of narrative. Robert Adams once noted that all such photography exists on three levels: As geography, as autobiography, and as metaphor. Taken individually, Adams was deeply skeptical about a landscape photograph's power as art. Taken together, he believed that the landscape photograph has the power to compel awe. John Gossage is his heir, whose lasting contribution is the subtle insertion of history, enabling what is essentially a flat medium to uncover the "layerings" of a place. At its very best, such layered, "archaeological" photography has led to masterpieces like Kikuji Kawada's "Chizu" ("The Map") and Gossage's now-considerable body of work. An absolute "must-have" title for John Gossage collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the very first page by John Gossage. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: This Exhibition Catalog is the ideal introduction/companion volume to and should NOT be confused with the book of the same title whose publication and imagery it celebrates. None of the copies was commercially sold. Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER JOHN GOSSAGE TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
