Presents "This Was The Photo League: Compassion And The Camera From The Depression To The Cold War". The enduring quality and lasting significance of the organization called "The Photo League of New York" (1936-1951). A nonprofit organization of dedicated photographers, the League wanted to have fun, create art, and also change the world in the process. Most members were united in their belief in the transformative power of photography to effect social change during what was a tumultuous period in American history. Lavishly illustrated with the now-classic work of Berenice Abbott, Morris Engel, Lewis W. Hine, Arnold Newman, Marvin E. Newman, Ruth Orkin, Aaron Siskind, Paul Strand, Max Yavno, and Weegee, among so many other great names in photography. An absolute "must-have" title for Photo League and photography book collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page by Marvin E. Newman. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. Laid-in are several pristine copies of the Souvenir Materials of the event during which his signature was obtained. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy (with Souvenir Materials) of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. 169 plates. Some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER COPY OF THIS TITLE IN OUR CATALOG).
