John Fairburn, London, 1822.

Contemporary ½ calf with marble boards, spine in five compartments of raised gilt-lined bands, gilt text on two, endpapers marbled. , Final leaf with directions “To the Binder” as called for in Cohn has been removed, however it has left an offset on the adjacent page, which indicates it was present at some stage, thus making this a first issue, regardless; aside from minor offsetting to the pages facing plates, and a small tear in pp. 337-338 (not affecting text), this book is in very good condition: plates and text are clean and bright., 8vo., P. (6), engraved title, blank, title, blank, preface v-viii, illustrations ix-xvi, contents xvii-xxiv, 1-489, blank, (6)., Complete with twenty-one handsomely hand-coloured caricature aquatints by the famous George Cruikshank, as well as a profusion of in-text woodcuts by the same.

Tooley notes that the “To the Binder” leaf is frequently lacking, including their Suzannet copy. However, pp. 143-4 is present in its cancelled form, but pp. 335-6 is in its uncancelled form, as described in both Cohn and Abbey. The latter notes that this is “one of the best imitations of Pierce Egan’s Life in London, 1821, which had plates by Robert and George Cruikshank…. The frontispiece or engraved title here is similar in conception to that of Life in London…. The first issue in boards has at the end the ‘To the Binder’ leaf with Marchant’s imprint.”, Cohn 109; Tooley 129; Abbey Travel 112
