Collection of three original documents relating to Henry B. Dawson and James Riker, namely, a printed receipt from a client to Dawson and a handwritten letter from Riker to Dawson with an accompanying small printed map. The receipt and letter are signed by Riker and Dawson, respectively (Dawson's signature may be in his hand or a business signature). Each document is on beige paper. Receipt and letter have handwritten and printed text in black ink. The map is printed in black ink and has a small dot of red ink highlighting a location described in the accompanying. Receipt datelined August 1867 in Morrisania, New York. Letter datelined December 14, 1885 in Waverly, Tioga County, New York. Map undated but c. 1885. Receipt: 8 1/2" x 3 1/2." Letter: 5 1/4" x 8." Map: 4 3/4" x 8 1/2." Each document is one page (text or illustrations printed on one side of the paper). All documents are very clean and intact except for slight age toning and darkening, a few horizontal and vertical fold lines, a few wrinkles, and slight wear to extremities. Each document and the entire collection are Very Good. This is a unique collection of three documents relating to Henry Barton Dawson and James Riker. Henry B. Dawson (1821-1889) was an English-American author and editor. He was originally from Lincolnshire, England and settled in New York. He edited several magazines and wrote a number of books. Dawson also owned and edited the Historical Magazine from 1866-1876. James Riker (1822-1889) was an American author, historian, and genealogist. He wrote a number of publications about the local history and genealogies of New York. One of his books chronicled the early history of Harlem. Riker also founded the Waverly Library and Museum. The following are further descriptions of each item. 1) Receipt. This is a receipt in which Dawon acknowledges payment for one annual subscription to his Historical Magazine from George N. Lawrence. Part of the receipt's text reads, "Mr. Geo. N. Lawrence, To Henry B. Dawson, Dr., To the Historical Magazine, from Jany. 1867, until Jany. 1860, 1888, $5.00, Received Payment, Henry B. Dawson." 2) Letter. This letter is handwritten on "The Waverly Library and Museum" stationery. "James Riker, Librarian" also printed at top. In the letter, Riker writes Dawson, "My dear Mr. Dawson, Am happy to send you the inclosed [sic], on which I have marked in red ink the site of the old Harlem Church of 1776. Trusting it may serve your [question?]. I remain, [yours] truly, James Riker." 3) Map: This is a small map which shows the New Harlem Village Plot in 1670. A small rectangle is drawn in red ink to show the location of the church mentioned in Riker's letter.. Book. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
