First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 86 pages. Landmark posthumous collection of the photographer's work. One of the most beautiful books on the photographic art and achievement of F. Holland Day. Limited Edition of 5000 copies. An austerely elegant production by Jack Woody and James Crump: Oversize-volume format. Yellow cloth boards with black design and titles embossed on the cover and spine, as issued. The cover is adapted from Aubrey Beardsley's original cover design for Oscar Wilde's "Salome". Photographs by F. Holland Day. Essay, "Suffering The Ideal", by James Crump. Printed in four colors with varnish on wood-free stock paper to the highest standards. In publisher's original shrinkwrap. In clear glassine DJ, as issued. Presents F. Holland Day's "Suffering The Ideal". Some of the finest and most representative works by F. Holland Day, one of the medium's finest Pictorialists, who went on to become one of its seminal Modernists. F. Holland Day saw art as a medium for both eroticism and mysticism. In his most ethereal photographs, he combined both, evoking the enduring glory of the past and his own historically vulnerable "sentimentality", the euphemism at the time for homosexuality ("straight" men were described as "earthy" and "sensual" while homosexuals were "idealistic" and "sentimental"). Crump examines F. Holland Day's beginnings, evolution, and continuing relevance. Even though contemporary male erotic art photography is no longer "sentimental", the photographer has remained an influence on figures like John Dugdale and Bill Jacobson, to name just two contemporary artists. F. Holland Day's goal was self-transcendence whereas many of his descendants today just want to have fun. Among the most famous portraits is that of the angelically handsome Khalil Gibran, who remains a cult figure among followers of mystical teachings. "The first great photographer of the male nude" (Jack Woody). An absolute "must-have" title for F. Holland Day collectors. This title is now collectible. This is one of few copies of the Limited Edition still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online are in bad condition: Remainder-marked, the glassine DJ heavily rubbed, and the internal pages soiled. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A scarce copy thus. 86 color plates. One of the greatest artist/photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER F. HOLLAND DAY TITLE IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0944092330.
