Brown 3/4 leather binding with brown cloth-covered boards. Red spine label with gilt lettering. Four raised bands. All edges marbled. 4 1/4" x 6 3/4." 443 pages, complete. Black-and-white plates, complete. Pages and covers are very clean and intact. Binding is tight. Former owner's faint ink inscription dated 1851 on the blank recto of the frontispiece. Pages slightly age-toned. Both endpapers and a few pages in the front and back are foxed. Most of the pages are not foxed. Covers have slight wear to corners, edges, and front and back outer joints. A Very Good copy. A classic of children's literature. This book is a collection of short stories that follows the overarching narrative of two boys from vastly different upbringings. Harry Sandford is a humble, virtuous boy born to a yeoman farmer. Tommy Merton is a spoiled, ill-mannered boy born into an aristocratic family. The narrative follows the two boys over the years in which many moral lessons are learned.
