De Klerk (W.) : PURITANS IN AFRICA, A Story of Afrikanerdom

376 pages, 8vo (220 x 145 mm), map, brown boards, dust jacket, signed by the author on the title page

'In this book William de Klerk, himself an Afrikaner from an old Cape family, paints a notable picture of his own people - like that of Cromwell, a man with whom the Afrikaner has some similarities, it shows the warts, it is not a court painting. It is brilliantly executed and reveals the strength, contradictions, weaknesses and passion of the subject. The book traces the history of the people from the time that the first settlers arrived from Europe in the seventeenth Century bringing with them the same deeply held belief in Christianity, the same devotion to the works and teaching of Calvin that distinguishes them today. It is, so the author shows, part of the irony of history that the people whose single minded pursuit of and passion for justice led them from subjection to independence should in the achievement of their aim have imposed a great and shameful injustice on another people. As Mr de Klerk points out, although the Afrikaner appeals to Calvin..."Apartheid would have been anathema to Calvin. He made it clear that there was no Utopia - the human Society was always a provision society, always renewing itself.' The great value of this book is that it is written from within; it is not the description of a people nor of a nation by an unsympathetic observer from outside, it is a self-critical appreciation by one of themselves.' Editor's note.
