The Gold Medal Series was completed in 85 parts and was printed in Holland between 1888 and 1919 (Osborne, volume 2, page 215). The illustrations with captions beneath are printed in colour. The illustration on the upper cover is 'The Naval Brigade in Action with the long quick firing guns at Ladysmith' and is from a design by R. Simkins (Richard Simkins, military painter and illustrator, 1840-1926), the three illustrations on the inside front cover are also of the Boer War. On the back cover the publisher claims to be 'The only recipient of a Gold Medal for children's publications.'
