DENNISTOUN, James : Memoirs Of Sir Robert Strange, Knt., Engraver, Member of Several Foreign Academies of Design; and of His Brother-In-Law Andrew Lumisden, Private Secretary to the Stuart Princes

Longman Brown Green & Longmans,, London, 1855

2 vols, a remarkably fresh fine set in the original royal blue ribbed cloth, seemingly unread. A very scarce title, especially in choice state. Robert Strange (1721-1792) was a celebrated Scottish engraver, with strong Jacobite sympathies. Shortly before the Jacobite rising of 1745 Strange fell in love with Isabella, daughter of William Lumisden (who was son of Andrew Lumsden) and sister of Andrew Lumisden, a strong Jacobite supporter. In 1747 they were married clandestinely. Isabella's letters were published by James Dennistoun.
