Dickinson (F.C.) : RELIEVERS OF LADYSMITH, With a "Key Plate to Messrs. Dickinson & Foster's Painting, "The Relievers of Ladysmith": Natal Field Force

1130 x 780 mm, photogravure (printed in sepia) on India paper, mounted on thick white paper, minor repairs to the India paper, with, "Key" 365 x 615 mm, printed on white paper and mounted on stiff card, tear in bottom left hand corner has been neatly repaired

Greenwall, 'Artists and Illustrators of the Anglo-Boer War,' mentions two prints by Dickinson. 'The National Army Museum has two photogravures published by Dickinson and Foster. The first one bears the title ‘The Relievers of Ladysmith Natal Field Force, Portraits of Officers Taking Part in the Campaign’ and the other, ‘Officers of the Highland Brigade 1900.’ The caption reads, 'Photogravure from a painting by Dickinson published by Messrs. Dickinson, April 9, 1906.' It has not been confirmed that the painter is in fact F.C. Dickinson. The present copy appears to be an India paper proof before letters as there is no caption but the print is signed in the bottom left hand corner in pencil 'Dickinson'. The print shows all the officers 'posed' on a hillside overlooking Ladysmith (J.M. Struben Imperial Guide points the way to Buller towards the town in the background) and the "Key" identifies them all by numbers from their outlines. All the major figures are present.
