Dulles, John Foster : John Foster Dulles Collection of Three Typed Letters Signed

Original collection of three typed letters signed by John Foster Dulles. The letters are typed on Dulles's personalized stationery with his address in New York. June 4, 1948; June 28, 1948; and September 1952. 6" x 9." Each letter is one page. The letters dated 1948 have Dulles's signature in black ink; the third signature is in blue ink. Each letter was once folded into thirds horizontally but these are likely original. Minuscule wrinkling on the letters. The letter dated June 28, 1948 has faint, almost imperceptible offsetting along the bottom and right edge of the paper. Each letter in the collection is Fine. John Foster Dulles (1888-1959) was an American diplomat who served as Secretary of State under President Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953-1959. Dulles was known for being a staunch opponent of Communism and was a significant figure during the Cold War. Dulles was the son of Rev. Allen Macy Dulles and Edith Foster. In these letters, Dulles corresponds with a man named Fielding J. Stilson who lives in Los Angeles. In the letter dated June 4, Dulles replies to Stilson that he is interested in pictures Stilson owns of two of his relatives on his mother's side, "General and Mrs. Foster." In particular, Dulles expresses interest in a miniature picture of General Foster by an artist named Quivy (or Quivvy). In the letter dated June 28, Dulles writes to Stilson about their completed transaction in which he obtained Quivy's portrait of General Foster and some photographs from him. The last letter dated September 22 is also about pictures of General Foster. In the letter, Dulles writes to Stilson, "I am much interested in what you tell me about the picture of General Foster which was hung in the American Embassy at Peking. I wonder what has become of it?" Given the title of General Foster and the fact that a portrait of him was in the American Embassy at Peking, Dulles is likely referring to his maternal grandfather, John W. Foster (1836-1917), who married Mary Parke McFerson (1859-1917). John W. Foster was an American diplomat like his grandson and likewise served as Secretary of State under President Benjamin Harrison. Fielding Johnson Stilson (1877-1953) was a realtor and developer of the Angelino Heights neighborhood in Los Angeles.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding
