Moliere was a famous French Classical playwright during the 17th century. He is well-known for his comedies, including 'Tartuffe', whose satirical portrayal of the clergy attracted strong criticism. His 'servante', Madeleine Bejart, was an actress in his performing troupe, and Moliere wrote several parts for her in his plays.

The painter, Hillemacher, became famous in mid-19th century Paris for his historical portraits, including this one. He won several artistic awards in his lifetime, including the Legion d'honneur in 1865.
