Evans, Franck Taylor : Autograph Manuscript Signed - "The Playhouse of the World, U.S.S. Pittsburgh."

Original manuscript on beige ledger paper handwritten and signed in black ink by Captain Franck Taylor Evans. Datelined April 21, 1926 in Trieste, Italy. 8 1/2" x 12." Six pages, complete. Captain Franck Taylor Evans (1875-1934) had a long and successful career in the U.S. Navy from 1894-1930. He fought in the Spanish-American War, saw service in World War I, and commanded the 800-man USS Pittsburgh as the American flagship in European waters from 1925-1926. This essay has some references to the everyday nuts and bolts of operating a large ship, but it is mostly about the excitement and adventure of being on an American flagship in European waters. He writes that being an officer on the Pittsburgh for him comes close to living in a "sort of Utopia." He describes the thrill of leaving the ship to be "off to play golf with some novelist he met in Palermo or some actress he knew in Naples." Evans writes of several events that unfold, from the anticipatory feeling of a visitor coming on board, to the sound of the Pittsburgh band, and to the sadness of sailors who are away from home for two years..
