From the series: Vasi, candelabri, cippi. This engraving is based on the scene that shows a quadriga (four-horse chariot) thundering towards the three obelisks of the meta (turning post). The charioteer wears a cap, leggings, and a short tunic with fasciae (protective leather straps). The reins are passed tightly around his waist. Disappearing behind the meta is a jubilator, a horseman who rode among the chariots to encourage the contestants during the race. The maker\\\\\\\'s name, Anniae Arescusa, appears in a panel above the horses.

Francesco Piranesi was born in 1759, he brought to a triumphal conclusion a number of his father’s incomplete or projected works, including the Paestum etchings, plans of Hadrian’s Villa, Tivoli, and of Pompeii, as well as a survey of the Emissario del Fucino. He also added further plates to various works including the Vedute di Roma and the Trofei di Ottaviano Augusto, and brought out an expanded edition of the Antichita Romane in 1784… Francesco also initiated a number of substantial works on art and archaeology, such as the Raccolta de’Tempi Antichi (1781/1790), Il Teatro di Ercolano (1783), Monumneti degli Scipioni (1785) and the Collection des plus belles statues (1786). He later carried out etchings after his father’s drawn views of Pompeii and included these etchings in the three-volumed publication Antiquites de la Grande Grece (1804-1807)
