Third Edition. Copy of Sir Velters Cornewall, 4th Baronet. Light brown 3/4 leather binding with marbled paper-covered boards. Gilt lettering on black leather spine label. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2." 454 pages, complete. Former owner's bookplate tipped in on front pastedown with a black-and-white illustrated coat of arms and printed text including a motto, "La Vie de Rante" and the name of the owner, "Sir Velters Cornewall Bart. [Baronet]." Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, the small occasional closed tear or mark, and some surface tears and two holes on front free endpaper. Covers are clean and intact overall but have light to moderate rubbing and moderate wear to corners and edges. Binding is tight. A Very Good copy. Informative read about the United States aimed toward prospective immigrants and visitors. Fearon describes his impressions of the American people and practical matters such as wages and rent in the U.S. Fearon visited the U.S. from August 6, 1817 to May 10, 1818. Among the many other subjects he describes are public buildings, American writers, liquor stores, tailors, printers, schools, boarding houses, clothing, religion, military service, slavery, climate, diseases, morals, immigrants, the trades, taxes, newspapers, local customs and mannerisms, Congress, lawyers, and traveling to the U.S. by ship. Includes "Advertisement to the Third Edition" in which Fearon appears to mostly discuss feedback and reactions to his book since the Second Edition. This copy has the bookplate of Sir Velters Cornewall, 4th Baronet (1824-1868). Velters was the eldest son of Sir George Cornewall, 3rd Baronet (1774-1835) and Jane Naper, the daughter of William Naper of Loughcrew in County Meath, Ireland. Velters succeeded his father on December 27, 1835. He served as Sheriff of Hereforshire in 1847 and Major in the local militia from 1855-1859. Velters was succeeded by his brother, Sir George Henry Cornewall, 5th Baronet (1833-1908), upon his passing. The Cornewall Baronetcy, originally known as the Amyand Baronetcy, of Moccas Court was created on August 9, 1764 in the Baronetage of Great Britain for Sir George Amyand, 1st Baronet (1720-1766). Amyand was a Whig politician, merchant, and physician who served as a Member of Parliament for Barnstaple in the House of Commons.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
