Visually the exterior appearance is acceptable for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. still with a fragile, degradable paper dw/dj,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the faults described that prevent a higher grading for the dw/dj. The traditional sailing craft of Britain survived in everyday working use well into this century(the 20th).In the decade before the First World War all the craft recorded here in this book were to be found around our coasts. They were of an astonishing variety: each harbour and creek or section of the coastline had developed over the centuries an individual type, with its form and rig,its sails and fishing gear,to suit local conditions and purposes. Now that they have been replaced by steam and diesel, more are to be found only in museums,or sometimes as hulks beached or rotting in quiet backwaters, though several have been rebuilt in recent years to be used for pleasure. Yet they were fine craft, often of great beauty. An essential part of British life and history, worth all the study, love and skill which Roger Finch has put into this spledid book, illustrated with his own drawings and plans. First there is an extended introduction, illustrated with a fine collection of old b/w photographs on origins and history; on building methods and materials; on fishing ways - with line and net and trawl; on life afloat; and on what is being done where to preserve the remaining craft for posterity. Then Mr Finch takes in turn 52 types of boat.Foe each he gives a map, showing the stretch of coast or estuary concerned,a plan of the hull and rigging,a pencil sketch of the craft in use,and an account of its particular history and uses.
