Facsimile copy of letter in paper folder with introductory notes by Neal Harlow and transcription of letter. Number 8 in the "Letters of the Gold Discovery" series published for the members of the Book Club of California. Joseph Libbey Folsom (1817-1855) was a U. S. Army officer who served in California under the command of Colonel Jonathan D. Stevenson starting in 1847. While in California, he purchased land that eventually became the town of Folsom after his death. This letter accompanied seven gold specimens from the American River that he sent to the National Institute in Washington, D. C., including one of the first specimens discovered by James Marshall. After the dissolution of the National Institute in 1861, these specimens came to the Smithsonian Institution, and the one discovered by Marshall is still exhibited in the Museum of Natural History..
