Kirk was the naturalist and medical man on Livingstone's Zambesi expedition, and he later became a respected administrator in East Africa where he played a major part in the suppression of slavery. These journals and letters throw much light on the events surrounding the expedition, as well as the great missionary and his relationships with the other members of the group, and the controversies surrounding them. This is the first time these journals have come into print.
