He went to work at age 10, and was a jack of all trades, having been, among other things, a sculptor's apprentice, a sailor, a logger, a railroad man, a street car driver, and a farmer. In 1900 Foster joined the Socialist Party, but was expelled in 1909, and then joined the I. W. W. , and, at different times, the Workers' Party, of which he was a chair, and, after a trip to Russia, the Communist Party. He is best known for writing books on labor and socialism, and for political agitation, including leading hundreds of thousand of steel workers on strikes.
