the jacket is frayed at the top of the spine with a few small tears. only a couple of mm of paper loss. the bottom of the spine is a little creased with very little loss. the jacket is also shelf rubbed and the back is marked. the jacket is price clipped. the book has no inscriptions and is near fine. well bound.. the delightful jacket has been got at by insects. sadly this has caused small holes in the back panel and to a lesser degree the spine. the front panel is unaffected. it could still be considered 'fair' as it still presents well in cellophane. the book itself is in very good condition indeed. there are no inscriptions and it appears very little used. there is some minor staining on the block of the book that could be sanded off.. A fine copy in a near fine sl. edgeworn unclipped first issue d.w. THE EXCESSIVELY SCARCE issue in black cloth. This has long been held to be the true first issue, described variuously as an export issue, a review issue or a trial binding. Trial binding is the most likely as more copies would show up fif it were an export issue, It is extremely unlikely that a special binding would have been attempted for review issues. This is by far the scarcest of all Fowles' books, and is the equivalent rarity in the Fowles canon to the true first issue of Fleming's Man With The Golden Gun (with golden gun in foil), which was withdrawn by the publishers after less than 1000 copies had been exported. . Ahearne (2000) lists an internat copy at $11290, stating that it was not possible to give an accurate assessment of value. This is the first copy we have seen in the past 30 years.
