John Stockdale, Piccadilly, London, 1805

Complete. A dignified if somewhat worn copy. In general venerable and pleasing condition. Fully bound with leather. Stamped Hellenic-influenced decoration (in affable, if worn condition). The Dictionary of Painters by the Reverend M Pilkington was the standard art reference book for many decades. Pilkington was a cad whose behaviour towards his former wife and others was ignored by those who found his work to be of great worth and use. In some ways it is not surprising that this "Supplement" was published by John Stockdale. Stockdale was known for his coarse manners, his efficacy as a bookseller and as a publisher unafraid of encountering the backhand of the law. Indeed, he was instrumental in ensuring an essential, long-standing change to the Libel Laws of England. This copy was owned by Thomas Wale of Shepton Mallet (who was a descendant of one of the founding Knights of the Garter). His neat signature, dated 1808, is found on the title page. There is also a waxed 'signature' from his signet ring. The front pastedown has an ex-libris plate with his decorative emblem. The page trims have decorative impressions. The boards are sound and august. The boards and spine are much worn about all edges, corners and seams. These now add character. Marbled end papers. The etchings have protective sheets that are intact, effective, also foxed. The pages, thick and certain. The pages have age-related marks and spotting and wear. In general, though, the pages are clear, generous, authentic, scholarly. A book full of character, stories, age and diligent competency. fk. Book Condition: Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: No Jacket
