This print comes from Piranesi\\\'s \\\'Carceri d\\\'Invenzione\\\' and is signed \\\"Piranesi F.\\\" in the lower left, and bears the numerals \\\"IX\\\" in the upper left.
The beams in the shape of a gallows are present in the lower left, as indicated in Hind for the second state. There are no additional numbers in the upper right. Hind 27.
The first dateable appearance of this celebrated series was in 1750. It is likely, however, that these plates had been published previously. The style of etching suggests a date closer to Piranesi\\\\\\\'s third Venetian period, c. 1745. In 1760 Piranesi was to reissue these plates as the Caceri d\\\\\\\'invenzione, with his name now on the title page. In many instances the original plates were heavily reworked with stronger tonal contrasts, more architecturally defined settings and more explicit imagery. (Wilton-Ely, p.48)
