Original publisher's pamphlet printed on white paper in black ink. No date, circa 1915. 6 1/4" x 9." Unpaginated, four pages (one leaf folded in half and printed on all sides), complete. Pamphlet is very clean and intact except for some light age toning throughout, browning along the edges, and a few small closed tears at the edges not affecting text. A Very Good copy. A concise pamphlet advocating for the fair treatment of immigrants, especially those from Europe, China, and Japan. Please note, some of the verbiage is controversial and appears to foster racial discrimination (e.g., a brief paragraph suggesting more European immigrants should be allowed in than Chinese and Japanese immigrants), but the overarching concept also largely appears to support the fair treatment of all immigrants amid a time of prevalent xenophobia in the United States. Sidney L. Gulick (1860-1945) was an American missionary, teacher, and author who worked to improve relations between Western and Eastern cultures in his time, namely those of the U.S. and of East Asian countries such as China and Japan. Gulick's specialty was the study of Japanese culture. During the early 1900s, when many Asian immigrants came to the U.S., Gulick was alarmed at the increasing resentment toward Asian Americans and subsequently campaigned against anti-Asian legislation and co-founded an organization, the Committee on World Friendship Among Children, that taught children the importance of racial equality.
