November 19, 1938 and May 6, 1948. 1938 letter measures 7 1/4" x 10 1/2"; 1948 letter measures 8" x 10 1/2." Two pages (one page each). 1938 letter is signed "Chan" and includes an inscription by him: "Must do a good job to win for the Party in 1940." 1948 letter is printed on United States Senate stationery and is signed "Chan Gurney." Both letters are very clean and undamaged. Signatures and inscription are also clean and intact. John Chandler "Chan" Gurney (1896-1985) was a U.S. Senator from South Dakota. In these two letters, Gurney writes to Edwin W. Tomlinson, a poet and resident of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In the letter dated 1938, Gurney writes that he believes that the elections of 1938 are a mandate for fiscal conservatism.
