H.C. PIPER : 1866 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT FARMER'S DIARY - WEATHER, CROPS, SUGARING, PRICES AND TREASURE FOR GENEALOGISTS

48mo - over 3" - 4" tall. On offer is a Civil War era handwritten manuscript diary written by H.C. Piper. Mr. Piper is identified by an 1891 receipt. Oddly there is a stamped, embossed name on the free endpaper of 'Geo. W. Gleason'. Mr. Gleason is named later in the book as a client of the incredibly hardworking author. Perhaps Mr. Gleason sold or traded the book to Mr. Piper. Our diarist is the son of a farmer of what appears to be a large operation. Daily references of the weather and farm related duties along with social activities and local events are noted: chopping wood, haying, sugaring, sewing circle, harvesting bark, going to the mill in Petersboro, to Harrisville, funeral of Granville Eubeth of Philadelphia, death of Edwin Pierce, planting wheat, corn, barley, rye and potatoes, taking the oxen, sheep, colts to mountain pastures, blackberrying, etc., etc. Mr. Piper also notes all of the people he is in contact with: Mrs. Sargent, Henry Pipes, Mr. Fuller, Josephine, Warren, Uncle Nathan, Thaddeus Moses, Mr. French, Mr. Price of Westford Mall, Mr. Reed and Lucretia, Alonzo Hutchinson, Daniel Townsend, Henry and Maria Preston, Dexter Mason, Joseph Perry, Walter Greenwoods, Proctor's blacksmith, Harvey Learned, Mr. Martin, James Alison, George Bonds, Abraham and Josephine Perkins, Hannah Holt, George W. Gleason. The diarist is very diligent and rarely misses a day. Prices paid and received for goods and purchase and the noting of local events and persons make this a treasure trove for New Hampshire genealogists and historians. While very legible and clean there are pages loose but all accounted for. Good.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good+. Binding: Leather
