Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was an American editor, publisher, politician, and founding editor of the New-York Tribune. He was also an abolitionist and advocate for women's rights. Greeley was a close ally of Abraham Lincoln although he sometimes disagreed with Lincoln's decisions and policies. Greeley ran for office in the 1872 presidential election as the nominee of the Liberal Republican Party, but incumbent Ulysses S. Grant won by a landslide. A. Oakey Hall (1826-1898) was an American politician, lawyer, and author. In this political essay, Hall tries to defame Greeley's career as a newspaper editor and publisher and politician by depicting him as a corrupt individual. A controversial quote by Greeley, in which he considers Southern secession as an alternative to the Civil War, is printed on the title page. Although only held briefly, Greeley's pro-secessionist views were later used against him by his opponents during the 1872 election.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
