Haraszthy, A. / Agoston Haraszthy : Wine-Making In California

Harper & Brothers, New York, 1864

8vo. 9pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with 12 engravings, salvaged from a damaged issue of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, Volume XXIX, No. 169, June, 1864. From the text, "Making all due allowances for the enthusiasm of a sanguine wine-grower, and guided only by that which has already been demonstrated, we may be certain that the production of wine is to become a leading branch of the industry of the Golden State. We therefore present an account of the processes of grape-culture and wine-making as now conducted in California, at the largest establishment of the kind in the world: The Buena Vista Vinicultural Association." Illustrations include the Buena Vista Ranche and Vineyard, works of the Buena Vista Vinicultural Association, multiple examples of vines, different examples of pruning, the wine tanks, and the wine cellars. The author, popularly known as the "Father of California Viticulture," was the first wine-maker in California and the founder of the Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma. He is also noted as the first Hungarian to settle permanently in the United States, and only the second to write a book about the country in his language. Housed in protective mylar report cover. This is a scarce, early, important piece of California wine history.. Book. Book Condition: VG. Binding: Soft cover
